The Call
A transgender woman picks up the phone and hears her brother's voice for the first time in a long while. Their mother has died, he tells her, and the family wants her to come home for the funeral, but only on one condition: she must arrive as the person they remember rather than as the woman she truly is. Cypriot director Marios Psaras builds this short drama around that painful request, with Nektarios Theodorou at the center of a story that plays out in the space between grief and self-respect. Spare and emotionally direct at about ten minutes, The Call asks what a person owes to family, what family owes in return, and whether honoring a mother's memory can ever require erasing oneself.
