Stagger

Olive is in the middle of a bitter fight with the younger woman she loves, who has just announced she is leaving, when memory pulls her backward. As the fight unfolds in the present, Olive drifts through the moments that first brought the two women together, and the contrast between what they once were and what they have become gives the quarrel its sting. Directed by Céline Ribard and starring Elen Rhys and Haruka Abe, this British short fits the arc of a whole relationship into just a few minutes, moving fluidly between past and present to show how tenderness and conflict can share the same room. Romantic and bittersweet, Stagger captures the way the end of a love story can bring its beginning rushing back, and asks whether those first sparks are enough to hold two people together.
