Good Night! My Rebel Girls

In 1950s Taiwan, A-Bao and her circle of friends lead double lives. By day they are proper, respectable women who meet every expectation; after dark they put on trousers, head out to the nightclubs and live openly as lesbians among their own. They even give their group a name: the Thirteen Rogue Girls. Directed by Huang Meng Wen and starring Ching Hui Chen, Hsu Fang Tung and Maki Lee, this half-hour Taiwanese short brings romance and drama to a little-seen chapter of postwar lesbian life, when friendship, style and daring had to flourish out of sight of the respectable world. It is a warm and spirited portrait of women who made room for themselves after midnight, and of the bonds that held their nighttime world together.
